Ball moss, an epiphyte commonly found clinging to live oaks and other trees in southwest Texas, is not a moss but a plant with flowers and seeds that can seriously affect the health of the tree therefore we recommend control; and mistletoe removal. Mistletoe is a parasite that grows on the branches or trunk of a tree and actually sends out roots that penetrate into the tree and take up nutrients.
